Duuh Duuh da da da Duuh Duuh da da da Duuh Duuh dun-dun-dun-duuuuh… Yes you’ve guess it…Star Wars! Like many others who often find themselves humming this precise tune for no reason whatsoever! I couldn’t help myself doing just that when creating my customers very own custom Star Wars tattoo design.
I can now say that I along with Chris’ Bookworm Tattoo Design have had the pleasure of participating in our customer epic adventures, thanks to the kindness of my customer. Therefore, I bid you to leave your reality for a little while and come with me and my customer as we embark on a journey into the past where you will see old and new heroes, villains, and saviours from the earliest Star Wars Episodes.

A Custom Tattoo Design Brief
Often, we artists are asked if there is something we don’t enjoy about the briefs we get. I must admit I have not had any yet that I have particularly disliked and with this custom tattoo design, I can honestly say… Absolutely nothing! It was such an incredible proposal I don’t think it could ever look bad. Star Wars is something that is much loved by millions of people in every corner of the world.
“I’d always contemplated getting a tattoo but I was never really sure what I wanted and I’d never really seen anything that I liked enough to actually have forever. I always felt that I needed to get something that was unique to me and something that I actually really wanted. That’s when I started to contemplate a Star Wars Tattoo design.”
“I had an idea of what I wanted and how it might look but I knew I’d never be able to create anything myself. I wanted some of the main characters from the films all blended together.”
As you can imagine this design has been done so many times already in many ways, so this was always going to be a tricky one, my highest priority was to make sure my customer got something that was not only epic but unique. After all, this Star Wars tattoo design was to be eventually used for a half sleeve tattoo.
I found myself overwhelmed at times when I first began exploring into all other versions of these Star Wars designs. There as so many amazing artists out there I was often left amazed by how many different Star Wars Tattoos there were! After much research and inspiration from the amazing Star Wars movie tracks I became confident and found myself getting rather excited, I knew my style would be perfect for what the customer wanted.
The text in itself is not my forte, therefore this feature became the most difficult. I managed to get around this by creating a quick collage on photoshop using sketches of each character. This approach to creating a custom tattoo design was new to me and helped me in a way that I was able to play around with the layout until I felt like it worked.
“When I approached Dark Design Graphics I didn’t really know what to expect. I was very pleased with the service I received and any questions I asked were answered quickly and promptly. They told me what would be happening and gave me good advice when I needed it.”
Everyone has their favourite character and mine, though hard to choose, would have to be Yoda, Darth Vader, and the Millennium Falcon! This might be due to the amount of time I spent studying and analysing each detail made! I become my own worst critic during this prosses, every inch of this Star Wars Tattoo had to be epic, by adding highlights to each of these characters I was able to make certain that they stood out from the crowd, it worked! And a lot better than I originally thought.
“I picked Jenn to do my design and I really couldn’t be happier. She’s done an incredible job, she’s done exactly what I asked for but it’s even better than what I could have ever expected. The attention to detail and the artwork itself is amazing, I’m very, very pleased.”
Much of this Star Wars tattoo design has an element of the dark and mysterious, to achieve this atmosphere I set about putting a dark wash over the entire piece once dry I was then able to paint in the darker shading to get a more controlled depth. I finished off the detailing of this custom tattoo design by added my stipple dot work effect with a 0.05 fineliner, perfect for stippling small detailed areas. This method was also used in my recent Half Sleeve Dotwork Tattoo Design. For the final touches, I added a touch of white fine liner and voila!
A Star Wars Tattoo Design
I became a lot more confident about black and white designs. I feel like this is the strongest one I’ve done so I can’t wait to get back into it to repeat the technique. I managed to accomplish this with a close eye, steady hand and the smallest fineliner and paintbrush I could find.
I am so in love with how this design turned out that I almost wanted to keep it!
“I would happily recommend their service to anyone else and if I ever look at getting another design I’d certainly go straight back to Dark Design Graphics and ask Jenn to work her magic once more! ~ Thanks very much!”
