Once I read the brief, I instantly knew this was going to be an interesting surrealism tattoo design, a piece of artwork I was thrilled to work on. It has a surreal and visionary theme, and though these kinds of designs are not as popular or known among the wider audience like the well known geometric, watercolour, or realistic designs, this design, full of symbolism and meaning, was exactly my type of artwork.
Sketching A Surrealism Tattoo Design
“This design has many, many meanings. so, my description is intentionally vague – This design is a collection of the many aspects of the human experience. It is a reminder of what I am and what I will become.”
Visionary Symbols In A Tattoo Design
The overall look and style for this surreal tattoo was put together by taking inspiration from a selection of reference images that my customer provided. After doing so we found that we still had a lot of space that needed to be filled with additional elements. I was given complete freedom to be creative whilst doing this, as long as the three most important elements were the focus, the violet flower, for his daughter, The Ouroboros symbol, a circular symbol depicting a snake, or less commonly a dragon, swallowing its tail, as an emblem of wholeness or infinity…
… Inside that, we have a crown – chakra, the centre for trust, devotion, inspiration, happiness, and positivity. It’s also the centre for a deeper connection with ourselves and connection with a force of life that is greater than ourselves.
Among these symbols are the eye, sun and moon. The hermetic seal of light are the emblems of the material body, soul and spirit. These three elements are believed to be necessary for alchemical transformation.
“Bojan’s talent is extraordinary. His care and consideration for my requests, balanced with his limitless creativity, resulted in a design that far exceeded my imagination. I’m grateful for having had the opportunity to work with Bojan. I truly believe only he could have created this for me. Thank you, Bojan!”
I like everything about this visionary, surrealism custom tattoo design, especially as this is just the style of artwork I personally love. I can’t decide what I like most about the design but if I had to I would say Alex’s idea of the skull and stairs made from bones, those two elements go really great together.
“Dark Design Graphics is an absolute pleasure to work with. Their process and attention to detail are second to none. Hire them, you won’t regret it, these are awesome people producing amazing work!”
Creating a Visionary Tattoo
It was a real pleasure working with Alex! From the very start, I noticed that he knows exactly what he’s after. The main three elements (death, rebirth, transcendence) has a meaning for him, and after adding some additional elements to this surrealism tattoo – it wasn’t long before we were both coming up with more ideas as to what we can incorporate into the design, each element holds an incredible amount of meaning.
Like my previous Coat of Arms Gift Design the complete surrealism tattoo design full sleeve is made in pointillism (dots) except for the outlines. I used Staedtler ink fine liners with several tips sizes. The darkest of areas, I used 0.4 and 0.3 ink fine liner for the first layer of dots. For the more detailed parts, like the skull, death element and stairs, I mostly used 0.1 ink fine liners, depending on how dark the area I wanted it to be.
